What is AI Ethics? Principles for Building Responsible AI Products
Imagine a self-driving car moving along a road with no traffic signals or pedestrian crossings. Suddenly, a person dashes in front of the vehicle. With failing brakes, the AI must decide: continue straight and collide with the jaywalking pedestrian or swerve to avoid them, risking an accident involving others. This classic ethical dilemma in AI highlights the urgent need for responsible AI development.
According to the Alan Turing Institute (UK), AI ethics is a set of values, principles, and standards that guide ethical behavior in the development and application of AI technology. The goal is to ensure that AI operates responsibly, transparently, and fairly while preventing harm to humans. Applying ethical principles not only mitigates risks but also enhances trust and maximizes AI’s benefits for society.

AI ethics is not just an abstract concept—it serves as a practical framework for guiding AI development and deployment in real-world applications. Humane-AI has proposed nine key principles to ensure AI systems align with ethical standards:
- Responsibility and Accountability: Organizations and individuals developing AI must be accountable for the impact of AI systems.
- Transparency and Explainability: AI must operate in a way that is clear and capable of explaining how decisions are made.
- No Harm: AI must be designed to ensure safety and avoid harm to people.
- Privacy and Data Governance: AI must comply with privacy regulations and respect users’ privacy.
- Fairness: AI should not create bias or unfairness against any individual or group in society.
- Social Well-being and Environment: AI must contribute to sustainable development and not harm the environment or society.
- Robustness and Reliability: AI must operate reliably and be capable of handling errors.
- Technological Dependence and Human Evolution: AI should not reduce human thinking ability or autonomy.
- Human Agency and Oversight: AI must be under human control and oversight to ensure proper operation.
When faced with ethical dilemmas, such as the self-driving car scenario, AI must make decisions based on core principles like accountability, transparency, and human oversight. In such cases, AI should operate under clear guidelines to uphold fairness and safety for all:
- Transparency: The decision-making process must be clear and explainable.
- No Harm: Minimize risk to humans as much as possible.
- Human Oversight: There should always be human control within the AI system.
