AI Center research team owns patent on 3D PointCloud in US

Recently, the AI Center research team has successfully applied for a patent on 3D Point Clouds named “Group Equivariant Convolution Neural Networks for 3D 3D PointCloud” at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This is the first US patent of FSOFT, also one of the most prestigious patents in the world, marking the development step and affirming the brand name of FSOFT AI Center in the international market.

The invention relates to a neural network configured to process a 3D PointCloud to perform machine learning tasks. 3D PointCloud is a collection of points in digital 3D space. These sets of points are unevenly arranged, out of order, as miniature versions of 3D objects, created by camera lasers, LiDARs, or RGB-Depth sensors.

The main invention of the patent is a system consisting of one or more computers with one or more storage devices containing instructions. When instructions are executed by one or more computers, it results in one or more computers implementing a preconfigured neural network that processes a 3D point cloud and returns an expression tensor representing the features of the input 3D cloud.

By using the group equivariance technique, this invention enables neural networks to be trained with superior computational efficiency while achieving performance comparable to, or even superior to, those of existing systems. This technique also requires less training data than the traditional technique. For example, when a suitable equivariance group is selected, the system will execute the technique invented in the patent. Neural networks using the technique invented in the patent will have outstanding performance in machine learning tasks such as Image Classification or 3D Image Semantic Segmentation.

Sharing about this achievement, the research team said: ‘‘The whole team is very happy to hear that the patent has been accepted. This is possible thanks to the efforts of all team members, and thanks to the persistent investment from FSOFT in general and AI Center in particular. Regarding the next project in project development, the group is currently developing more projects related to Point Cloud, including researching with AI Residents of the FPT Software AI Residency program and making a 3D-Vision-Based Software application for Robot Arm with 3D AI group under DXG”.

‘‘This is one of the very important milestones affirming the quality of FSOFT products when the 3D PointCloud project owns one of the most prestigious patents in the world. Patents are the basis for FSOFT to confidently protect its solutions and products in the international arena, as well as convince customers of FPT’s creativity and exclusive solutions. Along with that, the patent demonstrates FSOFT’s intelligence and research capacity, which is the foundation for AI Center to develop Intelligent Inspection solutions with 3D Point Clouds technology at the corporation in the near future,” CAIO of FSOFT Nguyen Xuan Phong shared.
